One of the biggest attractions of guitar and ukulele is that students can often begin playing recognisable songs quite quickly. With a few simple chords and strumming patterns, beginners can start making music early on, which can be very motivating.

Learning guitar or ukulele can help students develop:

  • Rhythm and timing

  • Finger coordination

  • Listening skills

  • Confidence

  • Creativity

  • Musical memory

  • Songwriting skills

  • The ability to accompany singing

  • Performance confidence

  • A strong understanding of chords and harmony

Guitar and ukulele are also very portable compared with many instruments, making them practical for home practice, group sessions, performances and informal music-making.

For many learners, guitar or ukulele is a brilliant route into music because it feels creative, flexible and immediately connected to the songs they enjoy.

Do I need a guitar before starting lessons?

In most cases, having access to a guitar for practice between lessons is helpful. However, if you are not sure what to buy, a teacher may be able to advise on whether acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar or ukulele would be most suitable.

Should I start on acoustic or electric guitar?

Both acoustic and electric guitar can be suitable for beginners. Acoustic guitar is often chosen for singer-songwriter, folk, pop and general chord playing, while electric guitar may suit students interested in rock, blues, metal, funk or band playing. The best choice usually depends on the music you want to play.

Is ukulele easier than guitar?

Ukulele can be a very approachable first instrument because it is smaller, has fewer strings and uses lighter string tension. However, guitar offers a wider range of styles and techniques. Both can be excellent choices for beginners.

Are guitar lessons suitable for children?

Yes. Guitar and ukulele lessons can be suitable for children, although the best starting point may depend on the child’s age, hand size and interests. Ukulele or smaller-sized guitars can sometimes be useful for younger learners.

Can adults learn guitar or ukulele?

Yes. Adults can absolutely learn guitar or ukulele, whether they are complete beginners or returning to music after a break. Lessons can be paced around confidence, goals and previous musical experience.

Can I take graded exams on guitar, bass or ukulele?

Yes. Many students work towards graded exams on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar or ukulele. Exams are optional, and lessons can also be taken purely for enjoyment or personal development.

Do I need to know how to read music?

No. Beginners do not need to read music before starting. Many guitar and ukulele students begin with chords, tabs, rhythm and simple songs. A teacher can introduce notation and theory gradually if useful.

Can guitar lessons help with singing or songwriting?

Yes. Guitar and ukulele are very useful for singers and songwriters because they help with chords, rhythm, harmony and accompaniment. Many singers learn guitar or ukulele so they can accompany themselves and write songs.
