Join a TVMS Ensemble – Grow and Enjoy Music Together

Playing music with others is where everything comes to life. If your child is learning an instrument or singing, joining an ensemble is one of the most rewarding and important next steps — building confidence, improving skills, and giving them the chance to be part of something bigger

Why join an Ensemble?

  • Build confidence and perform with others

  • Make friends and be part of a group

  • Improve musical skills faster

  • Work towards concerts, events and performances

FREE for all TVMS Instrument & Vocal Lesson Pupils

  • If your child has instrument or vocal lessons with TVMS, they can join our ensembles completely free.

  • Not currently having lessons with us? You can still join for a small monthly fee.

A Supportive Pathway from Beginner to Advanced

Shortly after starting lessons, most learners are invited to join one of our beginner ensembles. These groups offer a friendly, encouraging first experience of playing with others — an important step that builds confidence and musical skills. As musicians progress, they can move through our ensemble pathway towards our Premier Ensembles, which bring together some of the most experienced young players from across all four Tees Valley boroughs and beyond.

Not sure which ensemble is right? We’re happy to help you choose based on your child’s experience and instrument.

PARENT:

"Both my daughters have attended Tees Valley Youth Choir (TVYC) over the last 6 years. They have been given amazing support and teaching. They have both completed their Grade 8 in Musical Theatre and my 16 year old is now working towards her Diploma.  I cannot recommend the youth choir more highly. The team are amazing and the pupils form great friendships."

PARENT:

"I'm extremely happy with my son's experience of TVYO. We live in Newcastle and accept the travel to Teesside for all of the musical and social benefits he gets. Belonging to TVYO has played a large part in my son's decision to pursue music as a career. It's been a fantastic experience for him."

ALUMNA:

"Great company with very professional and caring teachers. Offers lots of options to get children involved in music making from a young age. The choirs and orchestras take students from beginners to a high standard whilst encouraging fun and creating lifelong friendships."

PARENT:

"Lovely staff, my daughter had lost interest a little but with a highly successful exam pass (albeit pricey) she has renewed interest. I have her tutor Miss Smith to thank for putting in the extra time to get her really ready.

They keep me up to date with information about her progress each year and costs etc."

ALUMNUS:

"I was a part of tees valley youth orchestra and choir and consistently had a great time trying trying a broad range of music to a high standard and still meet up with friends I made there today."

What are TVMS ensembles?

TVMS ensembles are music groups where young musicians and singers can play or perform together. These include orchestras, bands, choirs and beginner groups for different ages and experience levels across the Tees Valley.

Are ensembles free to join?

Yes. All TVMS instrumental and vocal pupils can join ensembles for free. Musicians who are not currently receiving lessons with TVMS can usually join for a small monthly membership fee, depending on the group.

Who can join a music ensemble?

TVMS ensembles are open to children, young people and, in some cases, adult learners. There are beginner ensembles for those new to playing or singing, as well as intermediate and advanced groups for more experienced musicians.

Do you need to have lessons with TVMS to join?

No. While ensembles are free for TVMS pupils, musicians who learn elsewhere can still join most ensembles for a small fee, subject to availability and suitability.

What types of ensembles are available?

TVMS offers a range of ensembles including string orchestras, wind bands, brass groups, beginner orchestras and choirs. There are options for different instruments, voices and ability levels across the Tees Valley.

Where do ensembles take place?

Ensembles take place at music centres across Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Redcar & Cleveland, depending on the group. Locations and rehearsal times vary.

How do I join a TVMS ensemble?

To join an ensemble, select a group from the list on this page and follow the sign-up link. If you are unsure which ensemble is right, you can contact Tees Valley Music Service for advice.

Why should my child join an ensemble?

Joining an ensemble helps young musicians build confidence, improve musical skills, make friends and experience performing as part of a group. It is an important step in musical development beyond individual lessons.
