Why learn a brass instrument?

Brass instruments are exciting, powerful and full of character. From the bright sound of the trumpet to the rich warmth of the trombone, French horn, euphonium and tuba, brass instruments play an important role in many different styles of music.

You can hear brass instruments in:

  • Brass bands

  • Orchestras

  • Concert bands

  • Jazz groups

  • Funk and soul bands

  • Film music

  • Musical theatre

  • Pop and rock arrangements

  • Ceremonial and fanfare music

Learning a brass instrument can help students develop focus, listening skills, confidence, coordination and musical expression. Brass playing also encourages good breathing habits and body awareness, as students learn how posture, breath and sound all work together.

For many learners, one of the best things about brass is the chance to play with others. Brass players are often welcomed into school bands, local ensembles, youth groups, brass bands and community music groups.

Can I learn Saxophone?

Yes, but despite its brassy appearance and bold sound - that's a woodwind instrument!

Do I need my own brass instrument before starting lessons?

In most cases, having access to an instrument for practice between lessons is helpful. However, if you are not sure which brass instrument to choose, a teacher may be able to offer advice before you buy or hire one.

Which brass instrument is best for beginners?

Trumpet, cornet, trombone, euphonium, baritone and tuba can all be suitable for beginners. The best choice often depends on the student’s age, size, musical interests and the type of music they would like to play. Cornet is a popular beginner brass instrument, especially for younger learners and those interested in brass bands.

Are brass lessons suitable for children?

Yes. Brass lessons can be suitable for children, although the right starting age may depend on the instrument, the child’s size and their ability to comfortably hold and play the instrument. Smaller brass instruments such as cornet or trumpet are often popular starting points.

Can adults learn a brass instrument?

Yes. Adults can absolutely learn brass instruments, whether they are complete beginners or returning to music after a break. Lessons can be paced around confidence, goals and previous musical experience.

Can I take graded exams on brass instruments?

Yes. Many students work towards graded exams on trumpet, cornet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, baritone or tuba. Exams are optional, and lessons can also be taken purely for fun or personal development.

Do brass instruments require strong lungs?

You do not need to have unusually strong lungs to start brass lessons. Good brass playing is about learning efficient breathing, posture and control over time. A teacher can help students develop these skills gradually.

Can brass students play in bands or ensembles?

Yes. Brass instruments are excellent for group music-making. Students may have opportunities to play in school bands, brass bands, concert bands, orchestras, jazz groups or local ensembles as they progress.
