Why learn drums or percussion?
Drums and percussion are exciting, physical and expressive instruments. They are perfect for students who enjoy rhythm, movement and the feeling of driving the music forward.
Percussion instruments appear in almost every style of music, from rock, pop and jazz to classical, musical theatre, funk, soul, world music and film scores. Whether you are playing a full drum kit, a snare drum, a tambourine, timpani, xylophone or hand drum, percussion helps shape the energy and character of a piece of music.
Learning drums or percussion can help students develop:
-
A strong sense of rhythm and timing
-
Coordination between hands and feet
-
Listening skills
-
Focus and concentration
-
Confidence
-
Musical independence
-
Teamwork through band and ensemble playing

Drummers and percussionists often play a key role in groups because they help keep everyone together. For many learners, that sense of responsibility and energy is one of the most rewarding parts of playing.

Do I need a drum kit before starting lessons?
Not always. Some beginners start with a pair of sticks and a practice pad, especially when learning basic rhythm, stick control and rudiments. However, if you want to learn drum kit, regular access to a drum kit or electronic kit will be helpful as you progress.
Are drums suitable for children?
Yes. Drums and percussion can be suitable for children, although the best starting point may depend on the child’s age, size, coordination and interests. Some children begin with general percussion, practice pad work or simple drum kit patterns.
Can adults learn drums or percussion?
Yes. Adults can absolutely learn drums or percussion, whether they are complete beginners or returning to music after a break. Lessons can be paced around confidence, goals and previous experience.
Are drums difficult to learn?
Like any instrument, drums take practice, but beginners can often start playing simple rhythms quite quickly. Lessons usually build coordination, timing and technique gradually so that students can progress with confidence.
Can I take graded exams on drums or percussion?
Yes. Many students work towards graded exams in drum kit or percussion. Exams are optional, and lessons can also be taken purely for enjoyment, confidence or personal development.
What is the difference between drums and percussion?
Drums usually refers to instruments such as drum kit, snare drum or bass drum. Percussion is a wider family that includes drums as well as instruments such as xylophone, glockenspiel, timpani, tambourine, triangle, cymbals, cajon and hand drums.
Are drum lessons noisy?
Drum kit can be loud, but there are practical options for home practice, including practice pads, electronic drum kits, lower-volume sticks and quieter practice routines. A teacher can advise on suitable options for your situation.
Can percussion students play in bands or ensembles?
Yes. Drummers and percussionists are needed in many groups, including rock bands, pop bands, jazz groups, orchestras, concert bands, school ensembles, theatre groups and community music groups.
