The 90 members of Tees Valley Youth Orchestra were joined by 40 additional players for their annual orchestra workshop day which gives aspiring musicians the chance to experience what it is like to play in a full symphony orchestra. Some of the new musicians had never performed in an orchestra before, and the orchestra certainly was ‘full’ in all sections – four harps included!
During the day there were rehearsals both for the full orchestra and for each instrumental section separately, culminating in a concert for parents at the end of the day. The programme included classics such as ‘Mars’ from Holst’s ‘Planets Suite’ and excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ ballets. Nicholas Nowicki, conductor of Tees Valley Youth Orchestra, said “Our guest players were fantastic. They showed dedication and professionalism in rehearsals and performed to a very high standard in the concert at the end of the day, which definitely surpassed my expectations! We hope that they may become the TVYO of the future”. For further information about joining the Orchestra, please contact TVMS on 01642 603600 or email TVNNowicki@tvms.org.uk.
